To successfully migrate to Australia as an Accountant applicants are required to complete the mandatory Skills Assessment process prior to lodging an application for Skilled Migration.

Receiving a positive Skills Assessment is the first stage in transferring your Accountant Skills to Australia. By completing this process an applicant is able to lodge an Expression of Interest and apply for registration with a Professional Accountancy Body in Australia.

Every Profession has in Australia has it’s own Skills Assessment Authority. It is the job of the assessor to verify and validate that your ID, employment history and qualifications. The three professional bodies which provide skills assessments for Accountants are:

Documentation requirements

The role of the Australian Accountants Skills Assessment Authority is to validate your identification, qualifications and experience. The assessor will require the following documents:

Evidence of Employment

 

For employment claims to be recognized for skilled migration, you must provide a signed reference from your employer and pay slips to substantiate your employment claims.

To pass Skills Assessment, employment must have:

  • occurred in the 10 years before your skills assessment application date
  • occurred after you completed a formal qualification
  • been paid and continuous for a minimum of 20 hours a week
  • be at least one year of accumulated employment

 

Tax returns and pay slips are required to substantiate employment history, and also a copy of your CV. If you are self employed then you must provide a testimonial written on official headed paper. The testimonial must be accompanied with a Statutory Declaration confirming its truthfulness, sworn before a Notary or Solicitor.

References must adhere to the following standards set by the Skills Assessment Authorities:

  • be on official letterhead of your employer
  • include the name and position of the person signing your employment reference
  • references from colleagues at the same level or below are not acceptable
  • the direct work email and phone number of the person writing the reference
  • include the start and end dates of your employment
  • multiple roles within the same organization must be listed separately
  • include the duties and responsibilities for each role.
  • state whether the employment is full time or part time
  • state your work hours each week
  • include your salary

 

Certificate of Good Standing

 

A Certificate of Good Standing from your Regulatory body must accompany the Skills Assessment application.

 

Evidence of Qualifications

 

To pass Skills Assessment and be considered suitably qualified as an Accountant in Australia, you must have a qualification that is determined to be equivalent to at least an Australian Bachelor’s Degree.

Membership of a professional accounting body outside of Australia is deemed to be equivalent to an Australian Bachelor’s Degree.

CPA Australia
